The environment is something we cannot take for granted, whether it’s our cold springtime or the state of our immediate surroundings.

To commemorate the company’s Green Week, Stagecoach Manchester is inviting groups and individuals across Greater Manchester to apply for a £500 ‘green’ bursary to rejuvenate an outdoor area. The bus operator is looking for an area that needs a touch of green-fingered TLC, which will benefit from the donation and help to improve the local environment.

The winning project, judged by Stagecoach Manchester and Wigan’s managing director, Christopher Bowles, will be awarded £500 to be used towards materials and labour. This would go towards building an attractive outdoor area for the whole community to enjoy.

To mark the fourth annual Green Week, entrants are invited to submit their project via email to StagecoachGreenFund[at]Tangerinepr.com, throughout the week. Entries close at 3pm on Friday 14 June. The successful project will be notified by 9am on Wednesday 19 June and invited to attend a special ‘breaking ground’ ceremony with Christopher, to mark the start of the horticultural work.

The competition is open to everyone including community groups, local clubs, such as Beavers or Guides, schools, workplaces and individuals who would like to nominate a specific area.

Speaking about Green Week and the makeover competition, Christopher said: “We have already demonstrated our environmental commitment this year, through the launch of 40 new hybrid buses onto the 192 route. We now want to take this one step further by helping to regenerate an outdoor space for members of our local community.
“The competition is a fantastic way of highlighting how important it is to look after our local surroundings and we are looking forward to receiving all the project nominations.”

All the Free Journeys You Could Eat on the 192 – For A Year!

Stagecoach Manchester and Stagecoach Wigan passengers can participate in the Green Week celebrations.  Through logging on to their online competition page, passengers can win a year’s free travel in their local Stagecoach area. Not only in Manchester and Wigan but everywhere in the UK which is Stagecoach territory. From Wick to Eastbourne, or Garston to Broadstairs.

All you need to do is answer a simple multiple choice question. Then submit your entry by the 31 May 2013, by 12 midday. There will be eighteen winners, one from each Stagecoach operating company area. The annual ticket will be valid for 52 weeks from a starting date agreed by each of Stagecoach’s local operations. (This excludes Oxford Tube, Megabus.com, MegabusGold.com, MegabusPlus, Scottish Citylink services and Stagecoach London).

One final word, I strongly dissuade the eating of electric hybrid Enviro400s. Plus, the mastication of moquette is a none-too-pleasant experience. Believe me, it wasn’t too good placing my milk teeth on Greater Manchester Transport’s finest checked pattern on the back seat of a Leyland Atlantean (and the vinyl seats on the top deck weren’t much better either)!

S.V., 22 May 2013.
