Whit Friday 2013 Results: Saddleworth Contests

East of the M60’s classified check on the Oldham and Saddleworth Area Whit Friday Brass Band Contest Results.

Brighouse and Rastrick top dog in Saddleworth

This year, Brighouse and Rastrick took top honours at the Saddleworth contests, winning at Delph, Dobcross, Greenfield, Scouthead and Austerlands and Uppermill. It wasn’t quite the clean sweep which Foden’s had in the Tameside contests. Hepworth won at Greenacres, with top honours going to Oldham (Lees) Band at the Grotton contest.

Brighouse and Rastrick won the Saddleworth and Oldham District Championship (£2,500) with Fairey in second place (£1,000). The best local band prize in the Saddleworth and Oldham District Championship went to Marsden Silver (£750).

As usual, the atmosphere along Chew Valley Road was electric. The Arctic style winds which dogged that morning’s Whit Walks disappeared, with some showers till 6pm. Among the creative deportment pieces was Blame It on the Boogie, which was played by Hade Edge band. Delph Youth band’s deportment piece was Katy Perry’s Firework – a far cry from Army of the Nile but a well arranged piece nonetheless. Towards the end of proceedings, Tartan Brass arrived wearing kilts before playing their contest march, The Contestor.

Last year on East of the M60, we said that Scouthead and Austerlands’ last contest would have been last year. We are happy to have learned otherwise, as this year’s contest saw 65 bands – up seven on last year.
