Christmas 2017 and New Year’s Day 2018 Trains and Trams in Tameside

Christmas and New Year train and tram service information for passengers in Tameside and surrounding area

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of the year again. Following on East of the M60’s look at Yuletide buses in the Tameside area, we turn our attention to local trains and trams.

Besides being a good time for seeing your relatives, the Yuletide period is also a popular time for engineering works. As always there will be a Sunday service on the trams on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Which is good news for Curzon Ashton fans taking a short trip to Ashton West.

A Sunday Brass Christmas: Boarshurst Silver Band’s 2017 Christmas Concert

More silliness, sublime music, and a time for giving

From Denshaw to Friezland, the Saddleworthian Christmas spirit is alive and well. Especially at its band clubs from Delph to Boarshurst. As always, the Boarshurst Silver Band concert never fails to disappoint. The programme is, as you would expect, more Christmassy but always different. This time, the second half was taken by the Boarshurst Silver Theatre Workshop’s pantomime.

Andy Burnham: The Free Market Has Failed Greater Manchester’s Buses

Keynote speech marks transition towards the re-regulation of Greater Manchester’s bus network

8551 Leyland Atlantean ANA 551Y, Northern Counties body, Greater Manchester Transport (1981 livery)
As demonstrated by the Northern Counties bodied Leyland Atlantean in this image, a unified identity for Greater Manchester’s bus network could return to our city region’s streets. This bus is seen in the 1981 version of Greater Manchester Transport’s livery.

There are two transport related footnotes which have had a great effect on my near forty-year existence as a child of the universe. The first one was the early years of bus deregulation, which has been well documented on this blog (as My Life in the Company of Buses). The second one, which I haven’t mentioned till now, was the split of GM Buses into GMS Buses and GM Buses North.

Stockport Silver Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (December 2017)

Stockport Silver Band brave winter conditions to fulfil Boarshurst date

Almost a year ago, Stockport Silver Band made their Boarshurst Band Club debut with a most enjoyable concert. A year later, the fourth section band gave us a good concert attended by a few hardy souls. The first half of the programme was a standard concert programme, whereas the second half was given over to Christmas songs.

University of Salford Brass Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club

Class act from future stars of brass banding world

Whereas the Oxbridge universities have produced Prime Ministers and Cabinet Ministers, the University of Salford has done the same with brass band players and conductors. The Brass Band Musicianship course, created by the late Dr. Roy Newsome, has an alumnae that is the envy of many institutions. Previous students have included Gary Cutt and Paul Lovatt-Cooper. Previous tutors include Peter Graham, Russell Gray, and Darrol Barry.

Glossop Old Band (Winter 2017): Sunday Brass at Boarshurst Band Club

Another smashing concert, courtesy of Marcus and Duncan

Black Friday: what’s that? What about Brass Sunday, which Boarshurst Band Club has 47 of throughout the whole year? On the concert date closest to Black Friday, Glossop Old Band made their winter visit to the Mecca of Brass Banding last night. As with previous nights, a convivial atmosphere.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (Winter 2017)

A winter warmer from Saddleworth’s Championship section band

After a scorching summer performance, Diggle Band returned to the Boarshurst Band Club with a real winter warmer. Once more, the Boarshurst audience was treated to a superb concert which warmed the cockles of our heart. For six of your finest British Pounds, a delightful night with some great solo pieces.

As for the programme, a lovely mix of brass banding classics and something new to engage the audience. This was not your microwaved pub lasagne with a perfunctory garnish. This was a Sunday dinner with freshly cooked vegetables, the finest beef, and a home made Yorkshire Pudding.

Boarshurst Silver Band’s 2017 Remembrance Sunday Concert: Review

Boarshurst Silver Band remembers

From Friezland to Denshaw, and Glossop to Buxton, the Remembrance Sunday concert is an established fixture in the brass bander’s calendar. As well as remembering our fallen comrades, it also means Christmas is on its way. As with last year’s concert, Boarshurst Silver Band, gave us all a fantastic night. Even with concerts taking place in Delph, Dobcross, and Diggle at the same time, there was a respectable turnout.
