Changes to former SpeedwellBus services and electric hybrids the order of the day

Volvo Olympian R365 DJN, Stotts of Oldham, Mossley Market Place
Prior to the middle of this April, Stott's of Oldham's only presence in Mossley have been on school services and the 353/354 routes. From then on, their low floor buses (one third smaller and tidier than this double decker above), seen on the 41 route will be a regular feature of the 343 route on weekdays.

Spring 2012’s raft of changes [16 April 2012] will be the first ones to take effect after the Coalition Government’s cut in the Bus Service Operators’ Grant. At the moment, nothing too catastrophic (yet) in the way of service cuts have reached Tameside. Operator changes and the introduction of electric hybrid buses set the agenda.

The biggest news set to affect Tameside and Glossop passengers is the formation of ‘High Peak’, the joint venture of Centrebus and Wellglade (of Trent Barton fame). From this coming Sunday [1st April], they will take over the 199 (Manchester Airport – Stockport – Buxton), 61 (Buxton – Glossop) and 62 (Marple – Hayfield) routes.

Gaining the most tenders from this set of changes is Stotts of Oldham. The 202 (Hyde – Broadbottom – Glossop) service will see the Lees Road company taking its evening service, along with its daytime counterpart, the 341. Stagecoach Manchester will continue to operate the Sunday and Bank Holiday services. The service will be largely unchanged apart from the fact Simmondley would no longer be served on weekdays.

In its place, High Peak will launch a part-route working of the 202 service, from Glossop to Chisworth via Gamesley and Charlesworth. On weekdays, it will serve Simmondley with a hourly daytime frequency, whereas Stotts of Oldham will take over on Saturdays, on the 341 route. From the middle of April, Simmondley bus users would have to grapple with three different operators, necessitating a trip to Hyde bus station or Hattersley’s Co-op for their System One Buscard. Whilst this may be a cinch for adult passengers, pity the BLine concessionary pass holder who travels regularly between Hyde and Glossop (given that children’s System One passes only cover the Greater Manchester boundary).

Returning to former SpeedwellBus routes, the 342/344 (Hyde – Backbower Circulars) will be taken over by Stagecoach Manchester at the expense of Stotts. On the other hand, Stotts of Oldham will gain the weekday 343 (Oldham – Mossley – Hyde) route. Given the length of the route, there should be some positive changes to its timekeeping, owing to reduced dead time between its garage and the centre of Oldham. Therefore, Stagecoach Manchester’s MAN single deckers will be usurped by their comfortable Optare Solos, unless they’ve got some more single deckers up their sleeve for the busy schooldays journeys.

At this moment in time, there is no other information regarding the fate of the 395 and 396 services operated by Bluebird, nor the 188 (Manchester – Ryder Brow) service also operated by the same company. However, it is also rumoured that this April’s changes may exceed the 100 mark, so there may be news of other changes between now and the 16th April.

What’s definite though is that Stagecoach’s 205, 206, 207 and 358 services will see minimal changes in terms of retiming. Evening peak journeys on the 205, 206 and 207 will depart from Piccadilly Gardens five minutes later than at present. On the 358, there has been some changes made to mid-point timings.

Everything’s Going Green?

Tameside passengers using the 168 route or odd journeys on the 345 at nighttimes will have seen Transport for Greater Manchester’s electric hybrid Solo SRs at Stand B or F at Ashton bus station. In the last month, some of the Stagecoach Manchester’s Enviro 400s have been seen on the 219 route. It is anticipated that mid April will see their electric hybrid vehicles in more regular use along Ashton Old Road.

There is also speculation that the 41 (Crowhill – Ashton-under-Lyne – Dukinfield, Tennyson Avenue) and the 419 (Ashton – Middleton) routes would be taken over by electric hybrid Solo SRs. At present, First Manchester’s Dukinfield garage operates them on the 380 (Stockport – Romiley Circular) and 386 (Stockport – Greave) routes. A further quartet have made their way to Rothesay Garage, so the 41 seems a likely candidate. Owing to capacity issues at Dukinfield, the 419 will be taken over by Oldham garage.

Before I go…

It may be clichéd to say this, but interesting times are ahead. Would the 41 experience a boon owing to a more modern fleet of environmentally friendly Solos? What other delights or cupboard skeletons are we awaiting?

As ever, feel free to comment on any glaring omissions, errors and other last minute changes. Till then…

  1. 188 has been registered by M Travel for 15 April (although on Traveline, they have it down as Maytree Travel). No news on the 395/396 so it looks like Bluebird will keep the service for the time being.

    1. Cheers, Shaun,

M Travel are a relatively new addition to the East Manchester scene on anything other than school services. I knew for sure that they’ve operated evening services is Stockport around 2009 using Mercedes Varios with a mainly red livery.

      Bye for now,

    1. Thanks Anthony.

I have looked again at the 341 timetables. At present, it leaves Glossop at 21 minutes to the hour, likewise with journeys from Hyde. With the new timetable, it would be retimed to leave Hyde at five past the hour (from 0905), likewise with journeys from Glossop on Saturdays. Oddly, the Monday to Friday journeys leave Glossop at eight minutes past the hour, starting from 1008. (An earlier journey departs at 0831 – leaving an 97 minute gap between 341s at 1008, along with an earlier 0731 journey).

Confused? I think they will be a little, what with three different operators and a 97 minute gap. Not least the fact that the gap may deter casual users.

      Bye for now,

      Stuart.

  4. Hi Rob and Michael,

I suppose the change of the 343’s Saturday route to its weekday one is to ensure continuity among residents. I wonder how long it would be before First Manchester’s Sunday, evening and Bank Holiday journeys follow suit?

On the up side, it also enhances Dukinfield’s links with The Dysart’s Arms, Hey Farm and Roaches lock.

    Bye for now,

    Stuart.

    1. Not sure they will Stuart, the 343 only diverts to Staley Rd when the 217/8 also provides a service on Huddersfield Road.

      1. Hi Rob,

It has been confirmed on the Transport for Greater Manchester website that the Saturday service of the 343 will follow the weekday route via Roaches Lock and Hey Farm. The evening, Bank Holiday and Sunday journeys will continue to follow the 20 July 1980 route omitting Carrbrook village and Roaches Lock, traversing Winterford Road.

        Bye for now,

  5. Morning Stuart/all,
M Travel are to take over the 188, Bluebird will continue to run the 395/6, both are on a 12 month contract I’m told.
Sad news regarding Stotts loosing the 41, they also loose the 154 but gain the 129.
Regarding the 343, great news that Stotts have finally got it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the odd decker works the busier trips, would certainly be good to see them back in regular service.

    Once again interesting times

  6. Morning Felixfind,

I can imagine Stott’s being a good custodian of the weekday 343 service, following their stewardship of the 41 (which I am sad to see lose). Therefore I wish them well on the 343; for the last five years I have often regarded Stott’s as a possible successor to First on the 343, following the company’s plans to withdraw the said route and the 387. (In 2007, only the 387 (Ashton to Hyde via Yew Tree and Newton) route was withdrawn, with 387 being reallocated for the then SpeedwellBus operated 238)

However, First’s acquisition of the weekday journeys from the middle of April also means one thing: new buses. This I suppose confirms reports that the new hybrid Solo SRs will be seen on the 41 route! For the anoraks and photographers, these will be the first all-over green liveried buses to be seen in Dukinfield since Glossopdale operated the 339, 340 and 343 services, breaking a 13 year gap. (Now, if they painted one Solo SR in SHMD livery…)

Furthermore, this confirms reports over slight changes to the 408 route, which from the same point will no longer serve the grounds of the Royal Oldham Hospital. That too is said to be having new electric hybrid Solo SRs, which are probably too wide for the hospital grounds’ access routes, compared with the narrower X, MX01, MX51 and MX54 registered Solos.

Elsewhere, it is worth pointing out that the 383, 384 and 409 routes will experience slight timetable changes; that TransPeak will become a High Peak operated route; and that the 375 (Stockport – Mellor) route will no longer see a Sunday and Bank Holiday services. Also, the 353 and 354 Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys will depart five minutes later than present (thus leaving The Commercial and Hare and Hounds at five past the hour, and Ashton bus station at 25 minutes to the hour).

    Bye for now,

    Stuart.

  7. Looks like Stotts are retiming the 343 service too, giving them extra running time (arriving at Hyde 2 minutes later and leaving 7 mins earlier) cutting the waiting time in Hyde down to 35 mins. Good to see Stotts on another service in Oldham and also back on Lees Road going past their HQ too.

Other Tameside changes not mentioned, JPT are re-routing their 169 journey to run along Oldham Road into Ashton, matching Stagecoach’s re-routing, the 345 evening and Sunday service is retimed to run 5 mins later, like the 353/354, while Bluebird are retiming the 396 weekday journey at 6.58am, 7.58am from Newton Heath, arriving 3 mins later into Ashton.

  8. Hi Michael,

I can answer your question as to why the 353/354 routes wouldn’t be getting the hybrid vehicles. In the last two months, they tested the vehicles along the routes; the problem was the buses themselves being too wide for the narrow streets served. The new Solo SRs are slightly wider than the MX54 reg ones. (Despite the fact that Leyland Nationals used to frequent the 353)

The main issue was claimed to be Lodge Lane (Delph), even though I’ve boarded MCW Metrobuses on the 355 route in the 1990s without difficulty. Perhaps there may have been similar issues with Palin Wood Drive, and Shaw Hall Bank Road.

    Bye for now,

    Stuart.

  9. Am I the only one struggling to understand the situation with the 202/341? As I understand it the frequency of the weekday 341 is reduced, and the missing journeys are replaced with a part route working of the 202 as far as Chisworth.

Chisworth, at the moment is not served by the 202 or 341, rather the 394. Therefore this “new” short working of the 202 is actually going to be a short working of the 394. So its either a mistake on somebody’s part, incorrectly numbering the route 202, or it is correct, in which case its very confusing.

Also, how would a short working of the 202 (394) terminating at Chisworth work? There’s nowhere to turn around!

One more thing, are High Peak retaining the 394? I found no mention of it on the “Latest Service Changes” page on TfGM’s website…

  10. Hi MH,

It is a little confusing regarding the 202/341, particularly among Simmondley residents.

Even though there is still a basic hourly service between Hyde and Glossop (via Charlesworth), the 202 is the 341’s evening, Sunday and Bank Holiday counterpart. The part route journeys of the 202 (operated by High Peak) are in addition to the hourly 341 on weekdays only. Therefore, whilst the weekday 341 omits Simmondley, the Saturday service will by contrast cover Simmondley to make up for the lost part route journeys.

The 202 part route journeys will be operated commercially. There was at one time another service which served Simmondley prior to the extension of the 341 – operated, ironically, by Bowers. At one time, the 341 used to terminate at the Old Pack Horse in Mottram prior to taking over Stagecoach Manchester’s Glossop extension of the 201 via Charlesworth.

At one time there used to be a college day part route of the 394 which terminated at Chisworth. I saw one such journey once, whilst operated by Stagecoach Manchester using a Leyland Olympian! Whether the Solos can manage that remains to be seen.

It seems to me that High Peak have retained the 394 route. I have checked on Derbyshire County Council’s service changes page, as they are more forthcoming on disclosing service changes on the High Peak area than TfGM’s site is. (It is always useful to check both TfGM and Derbyshire County Council pages for Glossop’s service changes)

    Bye for now,

    Stuart.

  11. mh,

Although part of it has been taken over by a car park there is still a bus turning circle at Chisworth (until now mainly used by school services).

I’d agree on the numbering – but I think its more tied up with the 202 in the morning been mainly a Glossop Gamesley circular apart from the one journey to Hyde which dosen’t carry on after the the change

For the 394 the only change I am aware of, is that will become a commercial rather than part subsided service

    Like

    1. Hi Anthony,

Interesting development on the 394 going commercial, though I wonder how long that’ll remain. I’ve always remembered the 394 as a subsidised service, part funded by GMPTE and Derbyshire County Council.
