Shepherd Group Youth Brass: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 08 December 2019

Hard working York youth band put on fantastic show

Hours before they came to Boarshurst Band Club, the Shepherd Group Youth Band held a concert in Selby Abbey. Courtesy of one of York Pullman’s finest coaches, they were on the M62 motorway whilst yours truly was enjoying his Sunday Dinner.

Strata Brass: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 01 December 2019

Superb concert with great solo performances and a Christmas set with a difference

In the words of their mercurial Musical Director Jonathan Bates, it has been quite a while since Strata Brass Band ever had a concert at Boarshurst Band Club. The last time they performed there, they were probably known as Hoyland Town Band. As for Jonathan Bates, he is known for his arranging skills and his role on Principal Horn with Foden’s Band. In many cases, absence makes the heart grow fonder – and Strata Brass’ latest concert was no exception.

St. John’s Band (Mossley): Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 24 November 2019

Another superb concert from Paul Towle and Co.

Was it really thirteen months ago since Paul Towle made his début as Musical Director for St. John’s Band (Mossley)? During his first visit as M.D., the Roughtown band were drafted in at short notice to replace Stalybridge Old Band. Last October’s concert was a cracking one. Could he do it again in late November?

Eagley Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (17 November 2019)

A most entertaining night of brass band music from Christopher Wormald and Co.

Last night, Eagley Band made what was their first visit to Boarshurst Band Club since records began. For Christopher Wormald, his previous visit to The Mecca of Brass Banding was with Hoover Bolton band. Apart from a nineteen-year hiatus, he has been part of the furniture with the Bolton band.

Before 1971, Eagley Band were effectively the house band for Eagley Mills, and used part of the premises for rehearsals. Since then, they have rehearsed in schools and has, for several years, been linked with Smithills School. As well as having a brass band, Smithills School is also where Eagley Band hold rehearsals. Some members of the school’s Senior Band may join Eagley Band or other bands in Bolton and surrounding area.

Boarshurst Silver Band’s Remembrance Day Concert (10 November 2019)

Another powerful performance from Boarshurst Silver Band in this year’s Remembrance Day concert

Remembrance Day: a time for contemplation, a time to remember the fallen, whether our siblings or ancestors served in the armed forces. A cathartic time, where we remember them in front of hundred or more people. Whether at Pots and Pans, Werneth Low, Parliament Square or St. Peter’s Square, we pay our respects.

Rochdale Borough Youth Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (03 November 2019)

A truly spectacular concert that put many open age bands to shame

Less than a month after the Dobcross Youth Band wowed audiences, another great youth band took to the stage at Boarshurst Band Club. Last night, it was the turn of Rochdale Borough Youth Band, one of four brass ensembles within Rochdale MBC’s Music Service.

With Elland Silver and Tewit Youth Bands setting the gold standard for youth banding, Dobcross Youth and Rochdale Borough Youth bands face stiff competition. Almost a month ago, we thought Dobcross Youth Band gave us a stunning concert.

Then came Rochdale Borough Youth Band.

Tintwistle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (27 October 2019)

Another fine Boarshurst début, and another superb concert

In the last few days, the weather gods haven’t exactly been on our side. There was reports of flooding in Derbyshire, Cheshire and the Midlands. Last night on Greenbridge Lane, there was no need to sail to Boarshurst Band Club in a Mirror dinghy. Nor a way of sailing from Chew Brook to Bottoms Reservoir without going via Stockport.

Making sure everything was shipshape for Tintwistle Band last night was Andrew Mallon, their Musical Director. As with Hebden Bridge’s concert last week, another pacy yet tight programme with something for everyone. Like Gareth last night, he was knowledgeable, precise, and humorous.

Hebden Bridge Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (20 October 2019)

Brindle’s Boarshurst début marked by a superb concert

With the nights getting longer and the days getting colder, the warmest of receptions were reserved for Hebden Bridge Band at the Boarshurst Band Club. With their first choice Musical Director David Hamilton in Norwich last night, the baton was passed on to Gareth Brindle. For the former Rainford Musical Director, his first ever visit to Boarshurst Band Club was a most memorable one.

Dobcross Youth Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (13 October 2019)

Dobcross Youth Band dazzle in a truly spectacular concert

In the brass banding world, this weekend was dominated by Philip Harper’s successful defence of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain Championship Section title. According to reports from the Royal Albert Hall national final, The Cory Band were unstoppable.

Similarly unstoppable, 199 miles north of Kensington Gore, was a Saddleworth youth band. Last night, Dobcross Youth Band proved to a full house at Boarshurst Band Club why they trumped their senior peers from the same village, at Blackpool Winter Gardens.

Hade Edge Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (06 October 2019)

Darker nights and rain fails to dampen spirits for Hade Edge Band

For every aspirant Musical Director, you could have your Albert Halls, Winter Gardens, and Symphony Halls in your list of fantasy brass banding venues. Few venues can quite compare with the atmosphere of a band club, like that of Boarshurst Band Club. For Jamie Smith and his new band, Hade Edge Band, it was a memorable two hours. All the more memorable as Hade Edge Band had a completely new programme.

From last night’s programme, it is clear that Mr Smith and Co. have designs on promotion. Instead of being a Second Section band ploughing its merry furrow, Jamie has taken a leaf from Messrs Brooks’ and Garlick’s book. Push the band and create a sense of togetherness as seen with Elland Silver and Boarshurst Silver bands. Hade Edge Band has a training band and a ‘B’ band which allows for promotion from within.
