Down To The Park: Walkden Gardens, Sale

The start of a new series that looks at Greater Manchester’s parks and gardens

At this moment in time, this pandemic is (hopefully) coming to an end. We are still encouraged to practice social distancing and try not to use public transport for non-essential travel. The message of “Hands, Faces, Space, and Fresh Air” and the lighter nights make trips to the park most favourable.

The Clippercard Makes a Comeback!

Clipper ticket resurrects spirit of the Clippercard on Metrolink trams

The Clippercard is dead… long live the Clippercard! Well, that’s how we may have reported on the self-cancelling ticket’s demise if East of the M60 was around in 2004. Years after the original ticket’s demise, Greater Manchester Transport’s ten-trips-for-the-price-of-nine tickets still carry fond memories. You might have travelled with a Clippercard by fair means (with a black plastic wallet) or foul (by boarding and passing the card on to your friend).

Sale Brass: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 26 May 2019

A Bank Holiday weekend bonanza of a concert

In the last eighteen months, we have seen how Sale Brass have grown as a band. A lot of it has been due to the hard work of John Anderson. Early last year they clinched a Second Place sectional prize at the Butlins Mineworkers’ contest in Skegness. Six weeks later they came second in the Fourth Section Regional Finals.

This year they went one better – by winning the Fourth Section title in the Regional Finals. Once again, a trip to Cheltenham looms. In 2020, Sale Brass will be a Third Section band.

Sale Brass: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (Spring 2018)

A super springtime sojourn for Sale Brass’ April concert

Sale Brass’ return to Boarshurst Band Club saw a spectacular springtime sojourn. The Cheshire band – runners-up in the Fourth Section North West Regional Championships – gave us a lively programme. One that included a number of forgotten pieces and a one-hit wonder from 1980.

After Alan Seymour left Sale Brass Band for BMP Europe Goodshaw Brass Band, Sale Brass found a good replacement. Cue one-time trombonist for Eccles Borough Band, John Anderson. Shortly after his arrival in December 2017, Sale Brass clinched a Second Place sectional prize at the Butlins Mineworkers’ contest in Skegness.

Middleton Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (March 2018)

Gibbs’ Boarshurst return results in another exciting concert

Newly promoted Middleton Band sprung into action with a superb concert at the Boarshurst Band Club. Last night [25 March], they also became the first senior band to feature in Boarshurst Band Club’s live concert streams.

By coincidence rather than design, Middleton Band’s visits to Boarshurst Band Club are close to the clocks going back or going forward. Whereas November’s concert was close to the former, last night’s concert was hours away from the latter. Continue reading “Middleton Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (March 2018)”

Middleton Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (November 2017)

Gibbs’ Boarshurst debut makes for exciting concert

As the mercury moves into single figures, you can be sure of a warm reception at Boarshurst Band Club in the winter months. Without exception was the reception during Middleton Band’s concert. Last night, their newly appointed Musical Director Kevin Gibbs, broke his Boarshurst Band Club duck. For him, a concert to remember, and the first of many visits to Greenbridge Lane.

Skelmanthorpe Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (October 2017)

Another great night with Jim Davies and Co. at the Boarshurst Band Club

Boarshurst Band Club, the Brass Vegas of the North, has played host to the good and the great of brass banding, from its present home since 1979. Almost a year after his previous appearance at Boarshurst, Jim Davies gave us another great concert to remember. It was one that gave us some good technical pieces, four memorable solo performances, and the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest winning song.

Flixton Brass Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 11 June 2017

Another tight performance for Boarshurst Silver Band’s fellow travellers to Cheltenham

In their second visit to Boarshurst Band Club over the last nine months, Flixton Band gave us a tight performance at yesterday’s concert [11 June 2017]. At the top end of Section Two, Flixton Band will be following Delph Band and Boarshurst Silver Band to Cheltenham in the National Championship Finals (16 September 2017). With excellent dynamic range, their performance was clinical and a real joy for the ears.

Middleton Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (26 March 2017)

Holt and Co.’s traditional programme well received

Almost a year ago to the day, our friends from Middleton Band gave us a wonderful concert. Their musical director, Andrew Baker, opted for a traditional yet lively programme. Their performance would have made many a Section Two band proud. He was describe in last year’s entry as being “informative and good-humoured at the same time”.
