Whit Friday: The Greatest Free Show on Earth

Boarshurst Silver Band Introduces The Whit Friday Challenge

Whit Friday Challenge introduced to ensure future of Saddleworth’s Whit Friday Band Contests

With rising costs, hosting The Greatest Free Show on Earth can be challenging. Each contest is made possible by its volunteers before, during, and after the event – from stewards to display board carriers. It also requires cooperation with local businesses, local authorities, and residents. It is a mammoth task, one that draws visitors from Denshaw to Friezland, and Top Mossley to Denton.

You Know You’ve Spent Too Long in Oldham If…

A wry look at the joys of East of the M60‘s other immediate locality

Before local government reorganisation in 1974, Oldham was large enough to warrant its own County Borough. On the 01 April 1974, this was superseded by Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, taking in part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and a few Urban District Councils. This included municipalities in Royton, Chadderton and Failsworth. Continue reading “You Know You’ve Spent Too Long in Oldham If…”

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Summer 2018

More summertime tweaks

  • Exactly what it says on the tin;
  • MCT Travel gains 418 from M Travel;
  • CityZap zapped.

Volvo B7TL X767 VUA, First Greater Manchester, Royton
The 409: one of a few First Greater Manchester services falling under the summertime timetables. This oldie, seen at Royton, was previously owned by First Bradford.

Once again the summertime changes are a quiet one for Oldham and Saddleworth bus passengers. Apart from the usual adjusted summer times, there has only been four notable service changes.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes Extra (Spring 2018)

Further bus service changes and retimings which affect Oldham and Saddleworth passengers

Since our little look at the future shape of Oldham’s and Saddleworth’s bus routes, a few more changes have been announced in the last fortnight. We now know more about the 59’s early morning journeys. Once again there are changes in store for the 408 route (no change there, then).

Like the Tameside and Glossop addendum, please treat this one as a companion to our more comprehensive bulletin (published on 07 March 2018).

Changes to Saddleworth routes see new shuttle service

  • New Saddleworth service to make up for lost Denshaw connections;
  • Farewell to the 82 night bus.

Stotts Tours, Dennis Dart SLF LJ56 ONK, Yorkshire Street, Oldham
Business as usual: Oldham escapes the worst of this spring’s service changes.

For once, Oldham passengers can sleep soundly with this spring’s changes. With the exception of Saddleworth’s bus routes, there will be some slight changes and operator revisions.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, January 2018

Retiming for FirstGroup routes and a Rosso retreat

First Greater Manchester Mercedes Citaro, W349 RJA, Oldham bus station
Most of First Greater Manchester’s timing changes will be seen on their trunk routes from Oldham and Saddleworth to Manchester. No changes are planned for the 425 service – timetables or new vehicles.

Whereas only three of FirstGroup’s Tameside routes have seen subtle changes, less subtle changes will be made to Oldham’s routes. Particularly on Manchester bound routes including the 180 and 182. The 181/182 services to Manchester will be at the sharpest end of their changes.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2017

Trunk bus routes revert to schooldays timetable, whereas slimline Saddleworth Sunday route replaces two services

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
No change for the 409 service, loading at Ashton-under-Lyne bus station.

This autumn, Saddleworth passengers will be seeing the most fundamental service changes, thanks largely to departmental spending cuts affecting TfGM. In place of Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys on the 353 and 354 services, there will be a brand new route. On the plus side, another journey option for the people of Denshaw. On the minus side is a more modest frequency and some changes affecting the more southerly parts of Saddleworth.
