In times of tragedy, it is music that matters. It can soothe the savage beast and make us happy for the best part of two minutes or two hours. With the Coronavirus situation, it has meant the cancellation of various concerts and music festivals. Even Whit Friday, The Greatest Free Show on Earth – has been postponed till next year.

The second concert of Boarshurst Band Club’s 2020 season of Sunday Brass Nights was another joy to behold after Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band’s performance. Off the stage it has been their 30+ year association with the Vernon Building Society which has provided the band a solid base. On the stage, it has been their position in brass banding’s top two sections. Bringing the story up to date was the band’s other pillar of consistency: their concerts. Their ability to give the audience a delightful show with something for everyone.

For Boarshurst Band Club’s second concert of 2018, VBS Poynton Band gave us another splendid performance. For the best part of two hours, the North East Cheshire band gave us a varied programme. Some of which had Scottish and Irish leanings, as expressed by the soprano solo, and the penultimate piece. Last night’s concert was living proof that Poynton Band will consolidate their position as a Championship Section band.
Last night [29 January], VBS Poynton Band had the honour of opening this year’s programme of evening concerts at Boarshurst Band Club. The North East Cheshire band have been promoted to the Championship Section this season. They proved their worth in the venue, colloquially known as The Mecca of Brass Banding. For the same price as two pints of lager in the club, the audience were treated to a wonderful night of music.

By 10.15pm yesterday, Vernon Building Society Poynton Band gave the Boarshurst faithful a sterling performance. With a varied programme, they demonstrated why they deserved their accolade as Section One Champions in Blackpool last month.
