How Stalybridge Old Band wowed a full house at the Royal Exchange’s pop-up theatre

In the last few days, the Royal Exchange’s Den pop-up theatre has taken up residence in Stalybridge Civic Hall. It has played host to a number of original productions which reflect the borough’s rich history with encouraging support. There has been family-friendly workshops and social gatherings with more performances and workshops to come till the 24 August 2019.

World’s oldest brass band could face extinction due to shortfall of players

Your Local Brass Band Needs You: Stalybridge Old Band, apart from playing numerous concerts, Whit Walks, and Whit Friday Brass Band Contests, performed during the Peterloo Massacre. Cuts in music education and the Tories’ penchant for non-creative subjects could jeopardise the band’s future. Here is Stalybridge Old Band, taking part in the 2014 Whit Walks in Armentieres Square.

Stalybridge Old Band are the World’s Oldest Brass Band. They have performed in the Peterloo Massacre, survived local government reorganisations, Thatcherism, and Michael Gove’s tenure as Education Secretary. From 1814 onwards, the band played on: even Adolf couldn’t stop the ‘Bridge Old Band from performing.

As with last August’s concert, David Ashworth’s band gave us a well thought out programme. There was plenty of traditional brass band favourites as well as a side serving of early Fleetwood Mac.

Stalybridge Old Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club

An August treat from the world’s oldest brass band

It has been a long time since Stalybridge Old Band darkened the doorstep of Boarshurst Band Club. Over three years, in the words of Musical Director, David Ashworth. The last time your reviewer saw the world’s oldest brass band, was at Stalybridge Civic Hall in December 2015. This was weeks before the Sunday Brass concert reviews appeared on East of the M60. At that gig, they were supported by The Yew Tree Singers.

Almost two years on, without Jean Depledge’s choral group, yours truly was glad to see Stalybridge Old Band in live form. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and Stalybridge Old Band proved just that on Sunday night.
