The Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (03 October 2021)

First concert at Boarshurst since March 2020 impresses audience with bona fide classics for all the family

Yesterday’s first concert at Boarshurst Band Club since the first lockdown was most entertaining and cathartic in equal measure. In one respect, it was great to see a return to normality at The Brass Band Mecca of the North. On the other hand, it made us slightly bleary eyed over the friends we have lost in the brass band movement since the pandemic began.

In Vision: The Ultimate Sunday Brass Night at Boarshurst Band Club

A Greatest Hits compilation of the best performances

In times of tragedy, it is music that matters. It can soothe the savage beast and make us happy for the best part of two minutes or two hours. With the Coronavirus situation, it has meant the cancellation of various concerts and music festivals. Even Whit Friday, The Greatest Free Show on Earth – has been postponed till next year.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (30 June 2019)

A fantastic concert with four great soloists and a selection of golden oldies

With march and hymn contests and (in most cases) Whit Friday coming to the fore, ‘Flaming June’ is a joyous month for lovers of brass band music. This year, June has given Boarshurst Band Club a selection of fantastic Sunday Brass Nights – and a memorable Saturday afternoon concert with Bodmin Town Band. Ending the month in style was Diggle Band’s concert.

Mass Brass 3: Saddleworth’s Brass Banding Bonanza

Why Dobcross Youth, Delph, Diggle, and Boarshurst Silver bands gave us 120 reasons to enjoy Saddleworth’s biggest night in brass band music

At Saddleworth Civic Hall, brass banding nights seldom get any bigger than the annual Mass Brass concert in Uppermill. Apart from any of Saddleworth’s bands hiring The Roly Polys as a support act, only the sight of 120 brass banders at twenty to ten could trump that. All four bands gave a good performance with a 30 minute set.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (November 2018)

Another great concert with three great soloists, a duet, and a trio

As the nights get darker and longer, the bright lights of Boarshurst Band Club are a glorious sight. Each Sunday at 7pm, magic and mystique awaits the concertgoer who enters The Mecca of Brass Banding. Last night, by 10pm, they were treated to a spellbinding performance by Diggle Band.

Pemberton Old ‘B’ Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club

Pemberton Old ‘B’ Band’s memorable Boarshurst debut

In recorded music, particularly 45 RPM singles, the ‘B’ side is a source of curiosity to the listener. Some people (thanks to cinema and educational streaming) think of ‘B’ as inferior. Or the middle carriage of a Greenfield train. In music there are some exceptions. The Model, a double ‘A’ side is better known than Computer Love, the ‘A’ side of Kraftwerk’s UK Number One single from 1982. In brass banding, the ‘B’ bands can surpass the senior bands in their virtuosity and technique.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (June 2018)

Three sublime solo performances mark a splendid concert

In the last year, there has been three concerts featuring Diggle Band at the Boarshurst Band Club. Each one including last night’s had three different conductors. Last June it was Sean Conway (who stood in for Steven Walsh, who was on holiday that Sunday); then in their December 2017 gig it was Steven Walsh. Last night was Diggle Band’s newest conductor, Melvin Tay.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (Winter 2017)

A winter warmer from Saddleworth’s Championship section band

After a scorching summer performance, Diggle Band returned to the Boarshurst Band Club with a real winter warmer. Once more, the Boarshurst audience was treated to a superb concert which warmed the cockles of our heart. For six of your finest British Pounds, a delightful night with some great solo pieces.

As for the programme, a lovely mix of brass banding classics and something new to engage the audience. This was not your microwaved pub lasagne with a perfunctory garnish. This was a Sunday dinner with freshly cooked vegetables, the finest beef, and a home made Yorkshire Pudding.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club, 25 June 2017

A great night with a top Saddleworth band

Less than six months on their last soirée at The World Famous Boarshurst Band Club, Diggle Band delivered another great concert. Last night’s well attended concert included two great solos, a satisfying horn feature, a couple of traditional marches, and another piece by Eric Ball.

Diggle Band: Sunday Brass at the Boarshurst Band Club (Winter 2016)

Another top drawer performance from Saddleworth’s Championship section band

Nearly five months ago, last night’s band darkened the doorstep of Boarshurst Band Club on a soggy Sunday night. Saddleworth’s Championship band gave us a fantastic concert. Though considerably lighter, that Sunday night was drizzly.

Five months later, more of the same weather though considerably darker. The most illuminating aspect of the damp November night was Diggle Band’s performance. Though we thought their June concert was superb, they excelled themselves. With Matthew Brown as guest conductor, we were treated to a traditional yet pulsating programme.
