The start of bus deregulation gave us a mix of smaller operators, trying to muscle in on the big boys’ territory. Some had great success, identifying niche markets and developing new bus routes. Among the new wave of bus operators were established coach operators. Some of which, like Mayne of Manchester, had operated buses in their earlier years, and prior to deregulation. Park Bridge is as much a cradle of the Industrial Revolution as Ironbridge and Coalport in Shropshire. Also its much bigger brother on the banks of the River Medlock, further downstream. According to tradition, the iron from the Park Bridge Iron Works were used for the rivets of the Eiffel Tower.

If you’re au fait with Tameside’s bus scene, you may be familiar with the 331 and 333 circular routes from Ashton-under-Lyne. They were originally Ashton Corporation’s 1 and 3 services with the former reaching Hurst in a clockwise direction via Broadoak Road. Who’d have thought it would have been a hundred years since the first buses and trams operated from Oldham town centre? We seem to have come a long way from the days when buses or trams used to stop outside The Star Inn. Buses were more widely adopted after the late 1920s when cross-city express routes complemented the town’s trams. Today’s new fangled trams traverse the Rochdale-Oldham Loop Line, and – by next year – will be stopping near The Star Inn. Plus ça change, except for the depubification of The Star Inn. In the last century, Oldham has had a number of termini and through stops, some of which discontinued by means of town centre redevelopment. Most recently, this has meant the Metrolink works. The History of Ashton-under-Lyne Bus Station

Prior to 1963, Ashton-under-Lyne’s buses and trolleybuses stopped at a variety of termini throughout the town centre. Manchester Corporation services called at Bow Street and Old Square (by Yates’ Wine Lodge); Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation’s buses opted for Market Street and Wellington Road by the town hall.
