Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, January 2018

Retiming for FirstGroup routes and a Rosso retreat

First Greater Manchester Mercedes Citaro, W349 RJA, Oldham bus station
Most of First Greater Manchester’s timing changes will be seen on their trunk routes from Oldham and Saddleworth to Manchester. No changes are planned for the 425 service – timetables or new vehicles.

Whereas only three of FirstGroup’s Tameside routes have seen subtle changes, less subtle changes will be made to Oldham’s routes. Particularly on Manchester bound routes including the 180 and 182. The 181/182 services to Manchester will be at the sharpest end of their changes.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2017

Trunk bus routes revert to schooldays timetable, whereas slimline Saddleworth Sunday route replaces two services

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
No change for the 409 service, loading at Ashton-under-Lyne bus station.

This autumn, Saddleworth passengers will be seeing the most fundamental service changes, thanks largely to departmental spending cuts affecting TfGM. In place of Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys on the 353 and 354 services, there will be a brand new route. On the plus side, another journey option for the people of Denshaw. On the minus side is a more modest frequency and some changes affecting the more southerly parts of Saddleworth.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Summer 2017

Summer bussing, slightest of changes

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
Not in the Summer Timetable: the 409 service, loading at Ashton-under-Lyne bus station.

For once, a quiet set of service changes affecting Oldham and Saddleworth bus passengers. This time, just a few tweaks to the summer timetables. Some more First Greater Manchester routes will be seeing a few tweaks, including the 58 and 81A.

FirstGroup reorganisation and tender changes behind latest updates

Enviro200 Stagecoach Manchester HH56 BLU, Oldham
Back on the Denshaw route: Stagecoach Manchester have regained the 407 service at the expense of Rosso – though with a reduced timetable. This image taken in 2015 shows one of their buses on a Bank Holiday Monday journey.

This month will see a few tender changes, albeit with some drastic cuts to their journeys. The already bricked-to-the-point-of-uselessness 408 service will take a battering for one. As for wanting a late night pint at The Fleece Inn in Mossley, you can forget that unless the 350 bus or County Cars forms part of your plans.

FirstGroup retime journeys following consultation events

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
The 409 to Rochdale: one of a few Oldham and Rochdale bound services covered by FirstGroup’s retiming exercise.

If you’ve ever tried catching the 409 in the evening peak, it can be quite a chore. At about half five, you would have had your fill of late buses, missing journeys, and packed vehicles. In this set month’s set of changes, could Oldham and Saddleworth passengers be benefiting from the results of FirstGroup’s consultation?

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2016

Diggle cuts going ahead

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
Back to school times: the 409 service and other trunk routes operated by First Greater Manchester.

As reported in the summertime bulletin, the 184 service will no longer serve Diggle, Old Station Turning. Apart from the cessation of the summertime schedules and the 184 service, everything is quiet in Oldham and Saddleworth, give or take some route changes.

Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Summer 2016

The old station’s not for turning

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
At the Sharp End: Summer 2016’s raft of service changes have gravely affected the people of Oldham. The 409 service will see fewer evening journeys on weekdays and Saturdays.

In an ironic twist of fate, the severance of Diggle Old Station Turning was announced at around the same time as Theresa May’s appointment as Britain’s second female Prime Minister. Whilst the MP for Maidenhead took her cue from Thatcher, the only thing that hasn’t been for turning was First Greater Manchester’s cuts to the 184 service in Diggle.

Oldham and Tameside Bus Service Changes, Winter 2014: More Fine Tuning

Trams and traffic trigger changes

Fine Tuning: Minor retiming will affect some of Tameside’s bus services, possibly affected by the Metrolink.

In a earlier East of the M60 ‘…Service Changes’ post, we mentioned in great detail welcome improvements to the 180 and 184 services. In case you missed that post, the 180 service will operate every half hour on Monday to Saturday daytimes. The 184 service will be boosted by extra Sunday daytimes journeys and an improved peak hour service. In this case, vox populi was the victor thanks to consultation events in the Saddleworth area. Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, January 2014: People Power Prevails

Frequencies restored and upgraded on key First Greater Manchester routes.

  • Upgraded Sunday and Evening journeys on 180 and 184 services;
  • Half hourly frequency restored on 180 service.
First Greater Manchester, Enviro400, Oldham bus station
The 184 will see an increase in mid-evening and Sunday journeys. Following three consultation events, the 180 will see its daytime half hourly frequency restored. Seen here is SN12 AEX, an Enviro400 double decker about to depart for Huddersfield.

People power is behind most of First Greater Manchester’s latest service changes. Last October, the daytime service of the 180 from Manchester to Greenfield [Clarence Hotel] was cut from half hourly to once hourly. From the 28 January 2014, the 180 will revert to its pre-October 2012 frequency. Continue reading “Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, January 2014: People Power Prevails”

Bus Route Wonders of Greater Manchester #5: 184, Manchester – Oldham – Huddersfield

The Fifth of East of the M60’s Seven Bus Route Wonders of the Greater Manchester area

First Greater Manchester, Enviro400, Oldham bus station
In Full Flight: an Enviro400, loading at Oldham bus station on the full fat version of the 184 route.

The recent fortunes of our fifth route was made possible by the vagaries of bus deregulation. Greater integration between FirstGroup’s Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire companies Continue reading “Bus Route Wonders of Greater Manchester #5: 184, Manchester – Oldham – Huddersfield”
