Tameside and Glossop Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2017

School day timetables restored plus some changes to Stalybridge routes

Back to normal: the 216 route, outside Ashton bus station.
  • First Greater Manchester withdraws Stalybridge journeys on 408 route;
  • Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys of 353 and 354 withdrawn and replaced by new 355 service;
  • Plus the usual minor changes, and details of services reverting to school day timetables.

This Autumn’s set of changes make for mixed reading in the borough. Unless you live in Stalybridge or the Roughtown area of Mossley. Both areas are at the sharpest end of cuts to tendered and commercial services from the 03 September.

The normal bus of choice on the 216 route, outside Ashton bus station.

For the first time in a good while, we have little to say about this summer’s set of service changes. All but one set of service changes entail the Summer timetables.

Tameside and Glossop Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2016

Changes marked by Bowles’ parting shot over traffic

Stagecoach Manchester, Optare Solo PO56 RNY, Stalybridge
I Should Solo: a fairly rare Stagecoach Manchester Optare Solo on the 340 service to Oldham (diverted that day due to Whit Friday).

For once, Autumn’s bus service changes are a little quiet. There has been no real shocks to the Tameside bus network (they’ll probably seen in October’s changes, closer to Hallowe’en). As usual, most of the services which have had summer timetables, will revert to their non-summer times.

The New Order: one of Stagecoach Manchester’s latest additions to the fleet.

Unless you travel from anywhere in Tameside to Diggle, or use the 409 service after 6pm, this summer’s set of changes are fairly minimal. Most of them are the usual Summer Timetable changes, that take advantage of the lack of the schools traffic.

Go Cheapway to… Daisy Nook

Canals and countryside a short walk away from Oldham and Ashton

Sammy's Basin, where the Fairbottom Canal turned left to Park Bridge, with the right hand section leading to the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal in Droylsden.
Sammy’s Basin, where the Fairbottom Canal turned left to Park Bridge, with the right hand section leading to the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal in Droylsden.

I first knew about Daisy Nook in my formative years passing the place on countless occasions aboard the 409 service to Oldham. All I knew about was its rural nature, and that it has a canal along the park itself. Another thing I also knew about was its Easter funfairs. I had that pleasure myself back on a sunny Good Friday in 1984, when the 346 used to go to Droylsden via Littlemoss.

Today, it remains a popular spot for anglers, walkers, riders, picnickers and photographers, and it is accessible from Littlemoss, Hollinwood and Bardsley Brow. It is hard to imagine how in some people’s living memories how Daisy Nook was far from the semi-rural idyll it is now. Continue reading “Go Cheapway to… Daisy Nook”
