Stagecoach Manchester now running two shuttle buses from Gorton and Longsight to Belle Vue Leisure Centre

Whether you think the pandemic is coming to an end or in the midst of a third wave, there are still plans to relax the government’s social distancing restrictions on the 19 July. In Greater Manchester, it is fair to say we are in the third wave, with most of the cases affecting schoolchildren and late-teens. Like last year, it is fair to say that the government’s latest easements could be too soon for the people in Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

Besides patronage, one of the biggest post-pandemic issues for bus operators is staffing levels. Drivers and engineering staff have been affected by absences due to self-isolation and furloughing over the last fifteen months. For regular and not-so-regular bus passengers, getting the staffing levels right is a must, as any lapses in quality could result in passengers taking to their cars.

National Apprenticeship Week 2021: The Bus Industry Builds Back Better

Amongst the terrible human cost of the Covid-19 crisis, the impact on our country’s young people and their prospects is of major concern. Research published last year by the Resolution Foundation suggested that youth unemployment will not return to pre-pandemic levels for at least another four years, with unemployment between 18 to 29-year-olds predicted to mushroom to levels last seen in the 1980s before the picture improves.
