John Miles’ best known chart single, another concert classic

  • Piece: Music;
  • Composer: John Miles;
  • Arranger: Derek Broadbent.

Music, so to misquote the Jarrow-born composer of the said song, is our first love and our last love. On East of the M60, we have written about its future and its past in some way, shape or form. Live or recorded.

Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, we have a brass band transcription of Music – performed by Dobcross Silver Band, who were conducted by Les Beevers in this clip. This clip came from a 1986 brass band programme on Granada Television (hosted by the late great Bob Smithies).

Music was a huge success for John Miles. It peaked at Number Three in the UK singles chart and at Number Four in the Dutch singles charts. This was one of two UK top ten singles (the other one was Slow Down).

In tomorrow’s Brass Banding Goes Pop window, we have our second Queen song of our Advent Calendar. That’ll be a performance by The Cory Band, with a piece arranged by their legendary musical director.

Behind the door

It’s a… euphonium (come on, you must have watched Brassed Off enough times to recognise that quote).

S.V., 22 December 2020.
