Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, 30 August 2020

A look at the more lasting changes that will affect Oldham and Saddleworth bus passengers

Earlier on, we said there were no service changes affecting Oldham and Saddleworth bus passengers this autumn. At the time, we only knew about the withdrawal of South Pennine Community Transport’s 359 route and placed this in our Tameside and Glossop changes.

Introducing the 305: Denton’s Dane Bank Route

East of the M60 looks at North Western’s new 305 route, set to begin operation soon

Stagecoach didn’t renege on its decision to change its 205 route. As of next week, its terminus will revert to being at Dane Bank, after a brief spell of terminating its Piccadilly Gardens route at Crown Point. You could be forgiven for thinking that Denton’s West End would be cut off from its own town centre. This would have ended the story and got the good people of Dane Bank changing at Debdale Park just to get to their own town centre for the first time since 1984.

A Top Tea Treasure: Co-op’s Indian Prince

Feast of the M60 unravels a tea time treasure

It has been a while since yours truly had ventured into a Co-op for anything besides a pint or two of milk. Yet my latest visit to Manchester’s Corporation Street branch did involve two pints of milk and a box of tea bags.

In Pictures: A Sneak Peek of Ashton-under-Lyne Interchange

A look at Ashton-under-Lyne Bus Station Mark 4

From the 30 August 2020, the fourth (and smartest) version of Ashton-under-Lyne bus station will be taking its first passengers. Earlier today [23 August], it was open to let passengers familiarise themselves with the surroundings and, most importantly, stand positions. With the wet weather, it proved its worth with some passers-by who sheltered from the rain.

Gimme (Flexi) 5! Stagecoach Greater Manchester Introduces Flexible Season Ticket

New flexible season ticket offers five days unlimited travel on Stagecoach Greater Manchester buses for the price of four days travel

Over the lockdown period, working from home has become the norm for white collar workers. Some of which have previously paid for seven-day, 14-day, monthly and annual season tickets for local buses, trams and trains. For some people, spending two days in the office and three days working from home has taken over from doing five daily commutes. Owing to this trend, the days of ‘traditional’ season tickets are numbered.

The EM60 Trivial Enquiry Bureau (#3, August 2020)

Another chance to look at what you have been searching for on East of the M60’s – plus our ‘very’ human powered responses

“How did I get here?” Yes, David Byrne could have been talking about East of the M60 had it existed in 1980. We probably would have pulled Xanadu to pieces after seeing it at the Stalybridge Palace. Or we would have been telling folk about this great musician who appeared on Piccadilly Radio’s Nightbeat programme. In our last look back in November 2018, Cob Coaling and East of the M60 topped our ten search strings.

How COVID-19 was a Foil for Gerrymandering our ‘A’ Level Grades

Algorithm used to favour Eton over Eltham, Harrow over Harlow, and Millfield over Middleton

If you wish to better yourself, I urge you not to be Northern, working-class, nor a former pupil of a bog-standard comprehensive or academy in an impoverished area. That it seems is the message we are getting from this year’s ‘A’ Level results. A staggering 40% of results were downgraded from the teachers’ predictions at each College of Further Education and Sixth Form Department.

Twice the Pleasure: Our Top 1980s 12″ Tunes: The Not So Perfect Ten

Our semi-definitive guide to the greatest 12″ singles of the 1980s

Sometimes, the radio edit of a chart single may lack that extra something which the 12″ version has. At the other end, some singles are better suited to the traditional two to four minutes of a seven inch 45.

The long single (in excess of five minutes) can fulfil a few other functions. It could either be a floor filler, as part of a series of different mixes to maintain its lofty chart position, or a convenient addition to the playlist. In other words, it is a suitable length to accommodate the DJ’s toilet break, or anything else s/he may do (which is best left to one’s imagination).
