Another Brass Band Advent Calendar: 26. ABBA Medley

Our thank-you for the music

  • Piece: ABBA Medley;
  • Composers: Bjorn Ulvaeus/Benny Andersson;
  • Arranger: Peter Kleine Schaars.

We have now come to the final door of this year’s Brass Band Advent Calendar. Over the previous 25 days, we have given you a super-sized concert programme with solos, test pieces, and popular music.

In the spirit of Sweden’s finest four-piece band, there was only one piece we could give you: Peter Kleine Schaars’ ABBA Medley, an arrangement of ABBA tunes.

Throughout this medley, our friends at Elland Silver Band are seen at Wetherby Bandstand. We open with Mamma Mia! (great song, not-so-great film franchise with its creaky script), before continuing with The Winner Takes It All and Knowing Me, Knowing You. Then Super Trouper, Take A Chance on Me, I Have A Dream, Fernando and (it is rude not to!) Thank You For The Music.

As you could see in this clip, we have some wonderful weather and a good choice of piece for a Bands In The Park concert. Performed by one of West Yorkshire’s finest brass bands.

If you are not tapping your toes throughout this medley, I would seek professional advice or listen to some more stunning brass band music on YouTube. Better still, go and see a few more concerts between now and next year or find that ABBA Gold CD.

As to the significance of our final window, there are two reasons. Firstly, goodness knows how many people associate Sweden with Ingvar Kamprad’s furniture store chain. Secondly, there’s a good chance you may be at their Ashton-under-Lyne, Leeds, or Warrington store today (because Yuletide is a wonderful time of the year for building bookcases).

…And Finally

We hope you have enjoyed our Brass Band Advent Calendar and, who knows, we might see you at a future concert. Enjoy what’s rest of Yuletide and have a Happy New Year.

S.V., 26 December 2019.
