Another Brass Band Advent Calendar: 16. Harlequin

A Philip Sparke piece performed as a euphonium solo

  • Piece: Harlequin;
  • Composer and Arranger: Philip Sparke.

Just to confuse things a little, this is one of two well known Harlequins in the brass banding world. One of them is a march by William Rimmer. This one is a different proposition altogether.

Harlequin (well, Harlequin rather than The Harlequin) was written for and dedicated to David Childs by Philip Sparke. It is billed as “a showpiece in the tradition of pantomime”. In this clip, Robbert Vos from Brassband Schoonhoven does a fantastic job with the euphonium solo.

Robbert Vos is also a euphonium tutor. In the Welsh Regional Championships in Wrexham this year, he won the Best Soloist prize for the First Section heats. In the words of Philip Harper, The Cory Band’s Musical Director, he is “a meticulous musician who plays with flair, panache and real attention to detail – the complete euphonium player.”

Tomorrow’s piece will have you turning the radiator down to its lowest setting. All will be revealed on the 17th.

    I am thoroughly enjoying your advent calendar music. I have been busy on Sunday nights so I haven’t made it to Boarshurst. Next Sunday it is the carol service at church. Don’t think I will make it to the concert. Have a good Christmas and I will see you in the new year.

    1. Hi Margaret,

      It is a shame you haven’t been able to make it to the Boarshurst concerts due to other commitments. The last concert we had at Boarshurst Band Club [Roberts Bakery Band] was fantastic. Having researched how many concerts have been planned for the run-up to Christmas, there is a dizzying number of gigs from the 13 – 22 December, with the 14th being the busiest date.

      Glad to see you have enjoyed this year’s Brass Band Advent Calendar. I had considered focusing on a different theme for this year, but popular demand meant a change of heart and a meatier ‘programme’.

      Warmly,

      Stuart.
