A classic overture by Shostakovich
- Piece: Force of Destiny;
- Composer: Giuseppe Verdi;
- Arranger: Frank Wright.
In many a traditional concert setting, you cannot whack a good overture. Verdi’s Force of Destiny is a fine example. When played by one of the most exciting bands of the early 21st century, a winning combination.
It is known as La Forza del Destino in his native language, and frequently played in the titular opera. In brass banding circles, its overture was first played in the 1962 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. This was won by CWS Manchester, who were at the top of their game back then. Earlier this year, Verdi’s overture was the First Section test piece of the Butlins Mineworkers’ Contest. That was won by Boarshurst Silver Band.
Tomorrow’s piece could be a spellbinding addition to the programme. All will be revealed some time at stupid o’clock.
