Another Brass Band Advent Calendar: 2. A Short Ride in a Brass Machine

A bespoke piece written for Briggus

  • Piece: A Short Ride in a Brass Machine;
  • Composer and Arranger: Andrew Baker.

Our second piece is a lively number by Andrew Baker, which was written for Brighouse and Rastrick Band’s 140th year in 2006. Which, incredibly, was also the year when East of the M60 began.

This immersive work has the same amount of variation you would expect in a test piece. Instead of fifteen or so minutes and a few movements, a single movement in just under three minutes. The title is a play on words on A Short Ride in a Fast Machine, composed by John Adams in 1986. If you haven’t got a spare fifteen minutes to listen to Labour and Love, Symphony of Marches or the like, Baker’s work is satisfying for time-pressed brass band lovers.

Tomorrow’s piece might have a slight Christmas theme. Whether it would remains to be seen.
