First ever Tameside Pride celebrations at Cheethams Park, Stalybridge a real success

Across the UK there has been a fair number Pride events this week. Abergavenny has had one as well as London, Darlington, and Macclesfield. On the 06 July, Cheethams Park, Stalybridge hosted Tameside’s first Pride event.

After successful campaigning and fundraising by Tameside’s LGBT community, the result of this was Tameside Pride. From 12 midday to 6pm, Cheethams Park played host to live entertainment with a comprehensive programme of acts. These included tributes to Pink and Paloma Faith, plus appearances from Tameside Radio’s Scott Bruton and Miss Annie Handbag. There was also cabaret throughout the day by Supertrashy.

As well as fairground rides, there was also pony rides, food stalls and appearances from Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Local charities, namely the Anthony Seddon Trust and Willow Wood Hospice were well represented. The local NHS trust offered blood pressure tests. Also present was Hyde Methodist Church, BarPop, and Vapours e-cigs.

At 2pm, Tameside Pride 2019 was officially opened by the Mayor of Tameside Leigh Drennan and his mayoral consort Cory James. Also present at the opening was the leader of Tameside MBC Councillor Brenda Warrington, Councillor Oliver Ryan, and Dr. Carl Austin Behan – Andy Burnham’s LGBT Advisor.

The turnout for Tameside’s first ever Pride celebrations was encouraging. For once, the borough’s citizens didn’t need to travel to Manchester or Oldham to enjoy a family-friendly and diversity-friendly afternoon away from home. We hope this leads to a bigger pride event, celebrating sexual diversity and (who knows) neurodiversity.

We hope this becomes a permanent fixture. Will subsequent years see Tameside Pride being hosted in other parts of the borough? I would be biased (showing my inner Stalybridge sympathies) by saying that Cheethams Park is a perfect venue. Not least its proximity to a good after hours venue in The New Stalybridge Labour Club and central location.
