Whit Friday 2019 Results: Saddleworth Contests

East of the M60’s classified check on the Oldham and Saddleworth Area Whit Friday Brass Band Contest Results.

Brighouse and Rastrick Band maintain top spot in Saddleworth

Whereas Foden’s Band continue their stunning run in Tameside, Brighouse and Rastrick Band remain top dog in the Saddleworth contests. This year there was some stiff competition from Oldham Band (Lees).

Brighouse and Rastrick topped the Lydgate, Lees and Springhead, Greenfield, Grotton, Dobcross, and Delph contests. Holding its own were Championship Section Oldham (Lees) Band, who picked up the highest honour at the Denshaw, and Scouthead and Austerlands contests. City of Bradford Band won the top prize at Uppermill’s contest whereas the Fairey Band won at Diggle.

At the Friezland contest, Eccleston Brass Band won the top prize. Fellow Third Section Band Uppermill Band came second. Overall, it was a good night for Uppermill Band who also picked up Third Section prizes at Greenfield, Grotton and Lydgate contests. At Lydgate they also came second in the Best Local Band prizes.

For Boarshurst Silver Band, they could have aped Take That in the 1992 Smash Hits Poll Winners’ Party with their haul of prizes in a TESCO trolley. At Dobcross they won the Best Saddleworth Band and Best Local Band on Whit Friday Morning prizes. Also a second place prize in the Best First Section prizes and the Best Saddleworth Band at their home contest in Greenfield.

Overall they came sixth at the Lees and Springhead contest and also picked up the Best First Section prize and the Best Oldham MBC area band prize. At the other contest venue with an ampersand (Scouthead and Austerlands), they won the First Section and Best Deportment prizes. At Uppermill they came away with the Best Saddleworth Band Not in Prizes prize.

Of the foreign bands, Krapfoss Hornorkester and Skeie Brass from Norway featured in the Third Section and Fourth Section prizes. Krapfoss Hornorkester won the Best Third Section prizes at Denshaw and Lees and Springhead contests. Also present was Lund University’s band from Sweden, Weston Silver Band (Canada), and Brassband Rejkjavikur – the only brass band in Iceland. Brassband Rejkjavikur won the Best Non-UK Band prize at Denshaw.

In the Youth prizes, it was a clean sweep for Wardle Academy Youth, winning Best Youth prizes in all but three contests. At Diggle, Oldham Music Centre won the Best Youth Band prize. They finished second to Rochdale Borough Youth at the Friezland and Greenfield contests. At the Greenfield contest they finished second in the Fourth Section prizes behind Penrith Town Band.

At Greenfield, the Best Entertainment prize went to Chav Brass. The runners-up prize was awarded to The Greatest Show Band, inspired by The Greatest Showman. Chav Brass’ total prize money from the Saddleworth contests (£1,300) was donated to the Whit Friday Challenge, a fundraising initiative to ensure the future of The Greatest Free Show on Earth.

Despite long waits for brass band players, the Saddleworth contests remain as popular as ever. More than anything they seem to have risen in popularity over the last decade attracting the attention of national and international media sources. Even The Guardian‘s Northern Editor Helen Pidd followed Chav Brass on their Long Whit Friday around Saddleworth.
