A Brass Band Advent Calendar: 18. Breezin’ Down Broadway

Lights, camera, action, and a decent little medley arranged by Goff Richards

Everything about this medley is appealing. So much so that Goff Richards’ whistle-stop tour through Broadway is a boon for any film or theatrically themed concert.

Breezin’ Down Broadway is a joyous medley which features bits of There’s No Business Like Show Business, That’s EntertainmentAnother Opening Another Show, Get Me To The Church on Time, Oklahoma!, and 76 Trombones.

It is a piece that is popular with lower section bands as well as Championship Section ones. As seen above, this 2014 performance by Wingates Band is a spectacular in Cinemascope. Or 4K if you can’t remember Cinemascope, Cinerama or Technicolor.

Like William Rimmer, Goff Richards is another brass banding figurehead that no self-respecting brass band fanatic should have heard of. Born in Cornwall, he has arranged several pieces and has composed original works. If you read our Greenfield Band concert review, one of his works includes Doyen, written for the sleek yet unsuccessful Leyland Royal Tiger Doyen coach.

For our nineteenth piece tomorrow, we shall leave you with something different. All will be revealed once we open the window.

S.V., 18 December 2018.
