A Brass Band Advent Calendar: 1. Troika

Dashing through the snow, a nice wintery themed piece

Before we start, the fire doors are the way you came in, beside the trombone section, and the back door which leads to Saddleworth’s exclusive establishment for pescatarians…

Opening our Brass Band Advent Calendar is Roberts Bakery Band. This 2013 clip shows them playing Ray Farr’s arrangement of Troika. The original piece was composed by Serge Prokofiev and featured in a five movement suite entitled Lieutenant Kijé. This was used in a 1934 film with the same name.

For many people, Troika conjures up images of jingle bells, reindeers, snow, and huskies. In Roberts Bakery Band’s performance at Tatton Park, Ray Farr’s arrangement has a swing flavour to it. Not a jingle bell in sight.

Tomorrow’s piece will be a popular concert number. All will be revealed once the second door is opened.

S.V., 01 December 2018.
