A preview of this year’s East of the M60 Advent Calendar
Dear Readers, it is that time of the year again on East of the M60. The one that begins with ‘C’ which is supposed to bring good fortune to retailers, online and physical. As well as peace and goodwill to everyone.
Another Christmas tradition is the East of the M60 Advent Calendar. We have covered long lost retail chains, ancient board games, and Commodore 64 musicians. Also synonymous with Christmas is brass band music.
If you ask anyone who plays or conducts a brass band, Christmas isn’t The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It means playing the usual Christmas songs and rehearsing the things. For many people who cannot get to, nor have the financial means for attending brass band concerts, it is their only chance of seeing a brass band. It can also be a nice little earner, in terms of monetary value and column inches.
Regular readers of our concert reviews from Boarshurst Band Club will know that brass bands are for life and not just for Christmas.
This year’s Advent Calendar builds upon this maxim. Each Advent Calendar ‘door’ opens up to reveal a brass band piece. In the days leading up to Christmas (plus Christmas Day and Boxing Day if you clap loud enough!), the calendar as a whole will resemble a super-sized concert programme. Complete with concert openers, overtures, brass banding cheese, and a few stunning solo works.
Within each door will be a YouTube clip with our featured piece and a little bit of text about, say Mephistopheles or the theme from Jurassic Park.
We hope our celebration of Christmas with a selection of legendary brass band pieces will be a talking point in band clubs, concert venues, or many a living room. For your maximum enjoyment, headphones or good speakers are desirable though not essential.
We cannot wait to see what our first door shall reveal on the 01 December. On with the show…
