Countdown to the 2018 World Cup of Greater Manchester Bus Routes

East of the M60 celebrates – or cashes in on – the 2018 World Cup Finals in its own special way

First things first: what you are about to see over the next month is a feast of football and the associated hyperbole. The adverts, the pundits having free reign of the airtime on terrestrial and satellite channels. It gives us carte blanche to watch football during office hours and buy St. George’s Cross flags from our favourite discount stores.

On East of the M60 it gives us carte blanche to shout “Come On England”.

Think again.

Over the next month, East of the M60 will be hosting its very own World Cup Finals. The 2018 World Cup of Greater Manchester Bus Routes. Competing for East of the M60’s title of the Best Bus Route in Greater Manchester will be 32 bus routes that operate within TfGM boundaries.

One other problem with wall-to-wall football is that fewer people tend to go out. Therefore, our selection of posts will also be a little advert for each bus route. These posts will be released to coincide with the half time intervals of World Cup 2018 game (during British Summer Time). From the group stages to the final game.

As with the World Cup there will be a group format: eight groups with four bus routes (one of them continuing towards Manchester or Salford). Each one represents the outer parts of Greater Manchester. The groups are also named after local comedians, musicians, or composers. Here they are as follows:

  • Group A (McGuinness): Bolton;
  • Group B (Formby): Wigan;
  • Group C (Stansfield): Rochdale;
  • Group D (Garvey): Bury;
  • Group E (Sidebottom): Trafford;
  • Group F (Manford): Stockport;
  • Group G (Moorhouse): Tameside;
  • Group H (Walton): Oldham.

The top two bus routes of each group will go through to the knockout stages.
