East of the M60’s classified check on the Oldham and Saddleworth Area Whit Friday Brass Band Contest Results.

Brighouse and Rastrick Band top of the tree

In the Saddleworth contests, Brighouse and Rastrick Band came up trumps. This year they picked up Best Open prizes in all but three contests throughout the Saddleworth area.

Brighouse and Rastrick topped the Delph, Denshaw, Dobcross, Greenfield, Grotton, and Lydgate contests. This year’s First Section North West Regional Championship winners Oldham (Lees) Band picked up the highest honour at the Diggle contest and a Best First Section prize at Lydgate. Uppermill Band, with the flugelhorn work of John Whittle, came top at the Friezland contest.

In the Uppermill and the Lees and Springhead contests, Leyland Band came out on top. Fairey’s only Best Open prize was awarded at the Scouthead and Austerlands contest.

In the Youth prizes, the competition was tougher than at the Tameside contests. Tewit Youth held their own as did Rochdale Youth and the 2nd Rossendale Scouts. There was no prizes for guessing who picked up the deportment prizes: either the Cheshire Constabulary band or The Band of the King’s Division.

At Greenfield, the Best Entertainment prize went to Disco Brass. The runners-up prize was awarded to Bad Ass Brass.

Whereas Tameside faired slightly better with the weather, the Saddleworth contests remained a honeypot for brass bands far and wide. Neither the patchy weather nor the Skipstopageddon scenario of Greenfield’s new train timetable stopped in the way of the Whit Friday crowds.
