Once more at the Boarshurst Band Club, Silk Brass gave us a stupendous concert. There was a good variety of classic brass banding pieces, and a couple of tunes you seldom see in concert programmes. In layperson’s terms, there was something for everyone.
East of the M60 looks at the first edition of The Oldham Times, the Lancashire town’s newest weekly title
On the 31 August, it was the end of an era as the Oldham Evening Chronicle printed its last edition. Its parent company, Hirst, Kidd, and Rennie, went into receivership. As well as its weekday daily newspaper, they also printed stationery. Their office on Rhodes Bank was also a bookshop and a booking office for the newspaper’s excursions. A healthy turnout at Boarshurst Band Club saw a fine concert from Linthwaite Brass Band. With a mix of Paul Kershaw’s good humoured delivery and a relaxing programme. A warm reception away from the longer nights and cooler weather. With reference to his theatrical background, pieces from stage musicals (or inspired by musicals) were well represented. Remembering Manchester’s express route to Chesterfield which, at one time, continued to Lincoln
Once upon a time, almost fifty years ago, it was possible to cross the Pennines by bus from Manchester, via a number of different routes. Without a change of bus en route. Today, there are only three routes where you can do just that. Two of which are National Express coach services: the 351 to Sheffield, and the 060 to Leeds via the M62. Stagecoach Manchester’s smartphone app adds another way of paying for bus travel
With the recent launch of Transport for Greater Manchester’s GetMeThere hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, Stagecoach Manchester’s recent upgrade was trouble free. This week, they have integrated Apple Pay and Android Pay facilities through the Stagecoach Bus smartphone app.
Four bands showcase test pieces for Cheltenham date
Four brass bands from Section Four to One showed off their playing techniques at Boarshurst Band Club last night [10 September]. This was in advance of this weekend’s National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain finals at Cheltenham.
