The Sultans of SID: #8, Tim Follin

Our eighth SID sultan of our Advent Calendar

From yesterday, our little clue was:

He could cause a right LED Storm in Fifth Gear.

LED Storm refers to the coin-op conversion by Go! Software, an overhead racing game. The Fifth Gear reference is a bit of a red herring. The musician in question is…

Tim Follin

Born in St. Helens, he was one of three children raised by Marjorie Follin. His brothers Michael, and Geoff, also had careers in the computer gaming industry. Mike left the industry to become a Church of England minister. Tim, the youngest of the three children, turned his attention to computer music. After composing C64 and ZX Spectrum music, he also turned his attention to TV production.

Quality rather than quantity best describes the nature of his output. His most celebrated works include the SID music to Bionic Commando, LED Storm, and Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts. Three absolute corkers.

Essential Tunes

i. Bionic Commando

Tim’s arrangement of the Bionic Commando music is sensational. This clip features the music from Stage One of the platforming game with a bionic hand. The composer cited progressive rock music as his prime influences, particularly Deep Purple. Speaking of which…

ii. LED Storm

For the title music of LED Storm, the C64 version’s theme was based on Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water. The SID generated bass is superb and best appreciated with the volume turned up pretty high. Also of note was its gold and silver chrome raster effects on this screen.

iii. Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts

There are many who will agree with me on this. The rain effects on the title screen music is amazing, almost sampled. As for the in-game music, moody. This clip has all the music from the C64 version.

Tomorrow’s Sultan of SID…

Once again we shan’t divulge who our next SID legend is, but we can give you a clue. The clue is as follows:

When Blue Turns To Matt (misquoted from a Cliff Richard song).

All will be revealed tomorrow.

S.V., 08 December 2016.
