Oldham and Saddleworth Bus Service Changes, Autumn 2016

Diggle cuts going ahead

First Greater Manchester Alexander Dennis ALX400, YJ51 RCX, Ashton-under-Lyne bus station
Back to school times: the 409 service and other trunk routes operated by First Greater Manchester.

As reported in the summertime bulletin, the 184 service will no longer serve Diggle, Old Station Turning. Apart from the cessation of the summertime schedules and the 184 service, everything is quiet in Oldham and Saddleworth, give or take some route changes.

First Greater Manchester’s biggest change affects the 425 service, which will see a slight change. This will also affect the 408 and 412 services.

Oldham changes

There will also be timing changes to the 180, 181, 182, and 184 services on weekdays. With the 184, also the severance of the Old Station Turning link we described earlier.

This autumn sees comprehensive changes to the 425 service from Fitton Hill to Holts Estate. At present, the 425 services have anticlockwise loops at their termini points. Instead, they will loop in a clockwise fashion to improve timekeeping at both ends. There will also be a slight reduction of the peak time frequency from every 12 minutes to, possibly, every 15 minutes.

From Fitton Hill, they will omit the section of Fir Tree Avenue between Fircroft Road and Rosary Road. Then, they will continue their clockwise section to the bottom of Fir Tree Avenue and Ashton Road – in line with the route’s evening journeys. At Holts Estate, via Lees New Road and Wildmoor Avenue.

On the 408‘s Rosso journeys (from Oldham to Shaw), all journeys will be rerouted to run via Buckstones. This is complemented by changes to the 435 service (also Rosso) from Rochdale to Shaw. These will be extended to the Wren’s Nest terminus from Buckstones.

The 412 – our third Rosso route of the round-up – will see improvements to the service from Oldham to Middleton via Royton. For some part of its daytime route, journeys have operated at an awkward 90 minute frequency. From the 04 September, all Rosso journeys will be hourly.

Fitton Hill’s other bus route will see a minor change. From the 05 September, the 396 service (MCT Travel) will no longer serve the Manchester Creative and Media Academy. This affects the 0745 journey from Ashton-under-Lyne.

Saddleworth changes

The only thing of note will be the aforementioned changes to the 180 and 184 services described in the Oldham changes section.

Back to School Timetables

The following Oldham and Saddleworth area services will revert to their autumn, winter, and spring timetables from the 04 September 2016.

  • 59: Rushcroft – Oldham – Middleton – Heaton Park – Manchester [Piccadilly Gardens] (First Greater Manchester);
  • 76: Oldham – Hollins – Limeside – Failsworth – Manchester [Piccadilly Gardens] (Stagecoach Manchester);
  • 83: Sholver – Oldham – Hollinwood – Failsworth – Manchester [Piccadilly Gardens] (First Greater Manchester);
  • 409: Rochdale – Royton – Oldham – Hathershaw – Ashton-under-Lyne (First Greater Manchester).

Whatever Next?

This time, reliability issues to the 425 service have seen the autumn changes affecting Fitton Hill and Holts Estate passengers. With the daytime service soon to follow its evening counterpart, there is improved links with Hathershaw. On the minus side, passengers unable to walk up Fir Tree Avenue will be deprived of a frequent service to the other part of Fitton Hill without a convoluted route (or changing buses outside The Druids Arms).

As we said with the Tameside changes, the Hallowe’en ones are set to be interesting. All will be revealed nearer the time as usual.

S.V., 30 August 2016.
