Lights, Cornet, Action: Band Club Lands Film Role

Judges Bar wins right to show films

After a gap almost 12 years, cinematic entertainment is set to return to Stalybridge. Judges Bar on 8 Corporation Street has won the right to show films. It is now registered by the British Film Institute as a Community Cinema. Known as the Stalybridge Town Cinema, films will be shown on one Tuesday per month.

The community cinema is an initiative by Stalybridge Town. From modest beginnings, it is hoped this leads to a more permanent setting. If successful this could lead to the Stalybridge Town Cinema moving to bigger premises such as the long vacated Pavilion Bars on Market Street.

Stalybridge’s last cinema, the Palace Cinema on Market Street, closed on the 31 August 2003. American Pie II: The Wedding was its last film. Its sister cinema, the Metro in Ashton-under-Lyne, closed shortly afterwards.

Judges Bar is so called after Jack Judge, who wrote and performed It’s A Long Way to Tipperary at the former Grand Theatre opposite. It is also the headquarters of Stalybridge Old Band – the oldest brass band in the world.

Stalybridge Town is calling for volunteers, plus input from former Palace employees and customers. They would like to hear from you if you wish to lend a hand, or share any memories. You can either comment on their Facebook page or email them on stalybridgetown[at]gmail.com.

For details of showings, check the Stalybridge Town Facebook page or the Stalybridge Town web page. Furthermore, expect the odd plug on East of the M60. We hope the new venture is a success.
