Whit Friday 2015 Results: Tameside Contests

East of the M60’s classified check on Tameside’s Whit Friday Brass Band Contests.

Thirteen times winners in the Tameside Whit Friday contests: Fodens Band at Stalybridge Labour Club

Fodens win, though only just

For the thirteenth year running, Fodens maintained their hold on the Tameside contests. This year’s results was far from the clean sweep of last year’s Whit Friday Brass Band Contests. Though winners in the Tameside Open Championship, their title was challenged at the two Ashton contests (Broadoak Hotel and Hurst Cross), Carrbrook, Droylsden, Dukinfield [Tame Valley] and Heyrod.

Finishing second in the Tameside Open Championship was Ashton-under-Lyne brass band who picked up top honours at Hurst Cross, Tame Valley and Heyrod. They also picked up a decent number of local prizes throughout the borough: Best Local at Stalybridge Labour Club, Hurst Cross and Droylsden. At Denton Cricket Club’s contest, they picked up a prize for Best Deportment.

Making their Whit Friday début, and stealing the show at the Bower Fold and Stalybridge Labour Club contests, was Hattersley Brass Band. They received a glowing reception at the latter venue after playing “Slaidburn”. The youngest brass band in this year’s contest (many of the players under 11 years of age) was an uplifting moment to behold. Though staunch traditionalists may object, their hooded fleeces (with each member having different colours) brought a wealth of colour to the arena. At Broadoak Hotel, they also won the Junior Deportment prize.

The Results:

With changeable weather throughout this year’s Whit Friday, any hopes of fine weather that evening was doubtful. Thankfully the rain held off, but conditions were more akin to February than the end of May. The thermometer was around 8ºC at Stalybridge Labour Club; better for milky coffee instead of lager.

Helped in no small part by recent spending cuts, prize monies either remained static or cut back. The biggest drop being Stalybridge Labour Club where the top prize fell from £1,000 to £500. Audenshaw’s contest at Aldwinians’ ground saw its top prize cut to £500 from £600.
