Stagecoach Manchester employee within Britain’s top ten bus people
- A third of UK Bus Driver of the Year finalists from Stagecoach;
- Two Stagecoach drivers finish in the top 10;
- 35 Stagecoach staff compete in national finals.
A Cheadle bus driver came fourth in the UK Bus Driver of the Year Awards at the annual finals held in Blackpool.
Daniel Wilton (40) was one of 119 drivers who battled for the ultimate accolade for passenger transport professionals: The UK Bus Driver of the Year. He was one of two Stagecoach Group employees to finish in the top 10 best drivers at the competition with Thomas Grant from Stagecoach in Warwickshire finishing ninth.
Daniel and Thomas also walked away with internal Stagecoach Group awards for the company’s highest placed competitors. Daniel, who normally drivers buses in Stockport, received a trophy, a cup and a financial award of £500.
Managing Director of Stagecoach’s UK Bus division, Bob Montgomery said, “I am delighted and proud to see that once again we have had a large number of our staff reach the finals in Blackpool. Nearly 30% of this years finalists were from Stagecoach so it’s great to see that are drivers are amongst the best in the country.
“These fantastic results are a testament to the skills of our drivers and the training they have received and further demonstrate that Stagecoach produces professional and skilful drivers across the country.”
During the competition the 119 drivers from bus operators across the UK undertook a series of driving tests in a bid to win the Bus Driver of the Year title. Over a two mile course, each was required to execute a series of precision manoeuvres including carrying out refuelling, negotiating a tight chicane and reversing out of a bay – all in an unfamiliar bus before pulling across the promenade tramway into the seafront traffic. At the end of the course each driver also had to pass a breathalyser test before completing a tough written test.
All 35 Stagecoach drivers who reached the national finals sealed their places in the competition following tough regional heats across the UK.
