Nash clinch N.P.L. First Division North Title

In the last minute of play, Curzon Ashton clinched the Northern Premier League First Division North title tonight at Station View, Starbeck.

Niall Cummins scored the only goal in the ninety second minute in a close away match versus Harrogate Railway Athletic, amid victorious scenes at Station View. For the first time in their 51 year history, the Nash will join the Northern Premier League Premier Division – two leagues below SkyBet League Two.

For Curzon Ashton, there has been some near miss attempts at gaining promotion, but they’ve finally done it. Should Ashton United fail to reach – or fail in – the promotion play-offs, the Ashton Derby could be back on course. There could be two Tameside clubs for the Nash if Stalybridge Celtic are relegated from the Football Conference North.

Their next home match [12 April] could well be a party as they face long time title contenders Warrington Town at the Tameside Stadium. So far, Darlington 1883, Warrington Town, Ramsbottom United and Bamber Bridge occupy the play-off positions. Curzon’s lead over Darlington 1883 is a massive 14 points.

Given the recent spate of bad news from Tameside’s non league sides, it is nice to hear a good news story. Congratulations are in order for Curzon Ashton. Well done!

S.V., 07 April 2014.
