Ass-pirational kitsch for the thinking fellow’s smoker.
01 January 2014: New Year’s Day, often a time to make resolutions. I remember how my parents gave up smoking in 1986. They said it was down to money. Perhaps it may have been a certain present I gave them the previous year.
It seemed like a good idea at the time you ordered this product in the Studio Catalogue:
The Smoking Donkey Cigarette Dispenser
At one time, smoking seemed less taboo than it is nowadays. Before 1992, you could smoke on Greater Manchester’s buses. In recent memory, you would have been shocked to see Sir Robin Day or Harold Wilson without a pipe. A great many working class households would have ash trays. (And of course, the Bottle Cutter in our previous entry would have been good for making them).
Adding some novelty to the smokers’ pleasure was the Donkey Cigarette Dispenser. Often appearing in novelty catalogues, this contraption was usually seen in faecal brown plastic. The design predates the Ronco and K-Tel eras with the Donkey Cigarette Dispenser possibly being of 1950s – 1960s origin (when plastic became more widespread).
Our steadfast donkey would be seen with a basket, designed to house 25 Silk Cut (other cigarette brands are available, behind closed doors of course). Then the smoker would pull the donkey’s ears forward (not recommended on a real one by the way). Its tail would move horizontally and out of its rear end would appear a cigarette. Smoker pulls cigarette out of its behind. Happy smoking. Cue laughs from family.
In 2013, they are still available for sale, quite easily on Amazon and in catalogues seen inside tabloid newspapers. Who’s going to come up with the first animal influenced e-Cig dispenser I wonder?
