Shoppers flock to new store in former Marks and Spencer unit
Earlier today [06 December 2013], customers flocked to the new Bargain Buys on Warrington Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. From the same people behind Poundworld, it is one of four Bargain Buys outlets from the Normanton based retail group and one of two in Lancashire (the second Lancastrian branch is in Kingsway Retail Park on the outskirts of Rochdale).
From 10 o’clock, shoppers were greeted to the site of BB, Bargain Buys’ mascot, somewhat inspired by a character from The Incredibles. Catalogues were dished out in and around the new store and some of its 40 staff handed out sweets to customers. At 1pm, the store was teeming with at one point, customers queuing to enter.
With 10,000 product lines, it also includes a number of items priced at a £1 or less. As well as selling similar items to its elder single priced sister, there is also knitwear, furniture and tinned groceries. In terms of stock, Bargain Buys falls somewhere between B&M Bargains [Bow Street] and Home Bargains [Staveleigh Way, Ladysmith Shopping Centre]. The layout is less chaotic than the former chain’s Ashton branch and more akin to its elder sister store, albeit on a larger scale (entrance right, exit left).
Though nothing new to Ashton’s retail mix, Bargain Buys could well give B&M, Wilkinson and Home Bargains a run for their money.
