Tomorrow morning, Metrolink’s East Manchester Line will be completed, offering Ashtonians a third way to the centre of Manchester. The new light rail service from Ashton-under-Lyne to Bury will not only offer commuters a less crowded way to Manchester city centre, but also reinstate a link to another Lancashire town, absent since September 2004. For most ordinary Britons, the economy is tanking or flatlining at best. We are feeling the pinch from higher food prices, utility bills and petrol costs. Bus users too are no exception: though single fares have continued to rise, operators have frozen or reduced the price of their season tickets. A recent price cut has seen increased patronage on Manchester bound buses, particular those of First Greater Manchester’s services.
