14. Just the thing for your Turkey and Tinsel break

Charterplan bag

Besides Greater Manchester Transport’s more workaday role (of safely carrying passengers from A to B over a given route), there was other concerns like the SELNEC Express Parcels concern in Parrs Wood, Dial-a-Ride and Charterplan. Originally known as SELNEC Travel, it adopted that name in 1975, offering private coach hire services and excursions. It also offered a direct coach service from Manchester to Paris and a selection of holidays in the UK and on the continent.

On one visit to Heaton Park in 2010, I saw a woman sporting this bag and politely asked her if I could photograph it. She agreed, hence the end result. The bag has outlived Charterplan itself as their tours and excursions programme was taken over by National Holidays. Today, National Holidays is still trading, albeit as a low cost subsidiary for Shearings (inherited from the Wigan company’s takeover of Wallace Arnold, their more recent previous owners).

Bus Route of Christmas Past: The Oldham Corporation Transport and North Western Road Car Company joint route from Manchester to Uppermill via Greenfield. This route approached Uppermill via Grotton, Lydgate and Grasscroft, whereas sister route 13 entered Uppermill via Scouthead.

Today, its successor is the 184 route which offers a half hourly daytime service to Uppermill with some journeys continuing to Huddersfield via the old 365 route. On Sundays, Bank Holidays and Evenings, it operates every hour from Manchester to Uppermill with a two-hourly extension to Huddersfield during the daytime.

Bus Route of Christmas Present: Today’s 14 is a relatively new daytime route, amalgamated from previous services 13 and 286. It is a circular route from Altrincham to Hale Barns and Oldfield Brow operated by Go Goodwins Coaches. The 14 operates every half hour as a full circular route from Hale Barns to Altrincham and Oldfield Brow before returning to Altrincham Interchange and Hale Barns. It assumes this function between 0826 and 1620 on Saturdays and 0856 to 1420 on weekdays. There are further part route journeys in the peak hours, though weekdays see a greater role for the shorter 13 service (Altrincham – Oldfield Brow Circular).
