9. An Oldham Corporation Roe bodied Leyland Atlantean
A distinctive modern bus, and as much a part of 1960s Oldham along with the late St. Peter’s Precinct and the new estates which would be served by these vehicles. Though this contemporary shot shows the Roe bodied Leyland Atlantean a few miles away from Oldham (just outside Heaton Park, Prestwich), they were regular performers on the 9 (Rochdale – Oldham – Ashton) and 21 (Fitton Hill – Oldham – Chadderton (Whitegate Lane)) routes.
Bus Route of Christmas Past: Victoria – Little Hulton. Operated by Lancashire United Transport, this service operated every half hour. Much of this former 9 route is incorporated by the 12, 33 and 68 First Manchester routes. The latter two call at Eccles whereas the 12 omits Eccles and Worsley. To trace the former route as close as possible, board a 12 from Manchester and change at Walkden for a 68 to Little Hulton.
Bus Route of Christmas Present: Maytree Travel’s new shuttle service (funded by TfGM and Salford City Council) from Salford Crescent railway station to MediaCityUK. As well as linking MediaCityUK with Salford University, it offers Pendleton and Langworthy residents a cheaper way to the Lowry Centre or Salford Crescent railway station. Which is a good thing.
