Glossop North End and Oldham Borough through but early exits for Chadderton and Abbey Hey

Glossop North End made up for their early exit in the F.A. Cup with a morale boosting 3 – 1 win over Shirebrook Town. The Hillmen took the lead early on in the game with the Nottinghamshire side equalising soon after. By half time, Glossop North End were leading 2 – 1, with a third goal in the second half ensuring passage to the First Round Proper.

On Friday, Oldham Borough booked their place into the next round, beating Wigan Robin Park 3 – 2 at the Whitebank Stadium. Our other teams east of the M60 motorway didn’t have the same luck as Oldham Borough and Glossop North End. Particularly Boro’s rivals Chadderton, who lost 4 – 2 to Formby. The Squirrels took the lead before half time with goals from Michael Boyle (18) and Connor Smith (38). Chadderton pulled one back with Matthew Chadwick scoring a 45th minute penalty. Connor Belger sealed it on the hour, though James Curley (77) made it 3 – 2. Three minutes later, Allan Kelly scored Formby fourth goal denying Chadderton a place in the First Round Proper.

Abbey Hey came off worst against Barnoldswick Town, losing 5 – 2. Despite being 2 – 0 up, Barnoldswick Town’s superior league position was telling, hence their comeback at The Silentnight Stadium.

Oldham Borough: Whitebank Stadium, Whitebank Road, Limeside, Oldham:

Bus: Stagecoach Manchester’s 76 service operates every 15 minutes from Oldham town centre and Manchester (Piccadilly Gardens). For passengers with FirstWeek/FirstMonth tickets, First Manchester’s hourly 183 service from Oldham is worth considering. Alternatively you can catch the 184 to Hollins Road from Manchester, Uppermill, Huddersfield or Oldham.

Glossop North End: Surrey Street, Glossop, Derbyshire:

Bus: Stagecoach Manchester’s 236/237 route from Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge railway station and Hollingworth is a good bet; from Hazel Grove and Marple, SpeedwellBus’ hourly 394 service may suffice; from Hyde, choose SpeedwellBus’ 341 and 397 (while you can!) services. Alight at stop near TESCO and walk up road between supermarket and Wren Nest Mill which leads to Surrey Street and the ground.

Rail: Northern Rail’s half hourly service from Manchester Piccadilly, Guide Bridge and Hadfield.

Best of luck to all those concerned…

Feel free to comment if you already follow the above teams, or thought of making an F.A. Vase match your first taste of non league football. You wouldn’t regret it.
