Faireys take over Fodens’ crown at Stalybridge Labour Club

A rather soggy Whit Friday saw Fairey (Geneva) Band win the Best Open prize at Stalybridge Labour Club. For the last 20 years, the Stalybridge contest crown was held by Fodens, who held the record for the most successive contest wins. This year they came second, with Northop Silver winning the third The Stalybridge contest also saw a change of adjudicator with Stephen Pritchard-Jones taking over from Derek Broadbent.

40 bands competed in the Stalybridge Labour Club contest, the same number as nearby Heyrod, though three more than Carrbrook and five less than at Bower Fold. The Best Local Band prize went to Ashton-under-Lyne Band, followed by Glossop Old Band and Stalybridge Old Band (who were also the first band to start, playing ‘Mephilstophiles’). The Youth prize went to Whitworth Valley and Healey Youth, with Littleborough winning the Best Deportment prize.

Other Tameside Contests:

Fodens dominated the other 10 contests in the Tameside area, collecting 1st prize at Audenshaw (Aldwinians RUFC), Broadoak, Carrbrook, Droylsden and Heyrod contests. Faireys also won contests at Upper Mossley, Bower Fold (Stalybridge Celtic AFC), Hurst Cross (Ashton United FC). Fodens also collected £75 for being the first band to perform at the Audenshaw contest.

Ashton under Lyne Band did themselves proud clinching the Highest Local prize at Audenshaw, Carrbrook, Droylsden, Heyrod and both Stalybridge contests. After a short time in the doldrums, Stalybridge Old Band seem to be on the way up, winning the Best Local prize at Dukinfield (Tame Valley) and Highest 3rd Section prize at Audenshaw.
