Reports of a Labour meltdown seem to have fallen on deaf ears in the Tameside area. With Hull losing to the Liberal Democrats and the Tories taking control of Plymouth, it has been business as usual for the Greater Manchester area. Rochdale switched from being in no overall control to being a Lib Dem council. Manchester, Wigan, Salford and Tameside metropolitan borough councils remained solid Labour territory.
In Tameside, Labour gained Audenshaw from the Lib Dems, enabling the council to enter its 27th year of Labour rule. The Dukinfield area remained solid Labour territory, as John Taylor was returned with an 800 plus majority over the second placed party. In the Dukinfield/Stalybridge ward, also held by Labour, the majority was a little under 300.
Dukinfield ward results (Turnout: 30.9%):
- JOHN TAYLOR (Labour): 1,364;
